The Aerobatic Display Teams S.I.G. have become known for our
special themed displays at the greatest annual modelling event -
Scale ModelWorld. But as the Coronavirus Pandemic threw the world into turmoil
and we all missed a year, we thought we would celebrate the return of SMW2021
by re-visiting a few of the themes we have presented in previous years, as a
reminder of what its all about !
A quick poll amongst our members who would be
attending SMW2021, revealed four of the most popular/favourite past themes that
those members would like to see on display again. Each of those four were also
labeled with the previous years that they appeared on our display.
Due to a number of factors (including Covid,
of course), it was inevitable that Scale ModelWorld would be scaled back
somewhat this year (no pun intended) and in fact, it only occupied two of the
main halls. So all of those IPMS Branches/Clubs and SIG's attending were told
weeks beforehand that nobody would be allowed more than a 12-foot display
stand... However.... When we arrived to set-up on the Friday afternoon, we were
one of a few exhibitors who found that we had been given extra tables to make
our stand 18 feet wide - this was due to a number of "no shows" on the day, so
the IPMS(UK) organisers re-jigged things slightly to avoid as much as possible,
having unsightly empty tables. We are grateful for this and were able to "take
up the slack" with extra models.
Although smaller than usual, it has to be
said that SMW2021 was still a great show, which had a real "buzz" about it - it
was great to be back and wonderful to see everyone again ! Massive thanks and
credit to the IPMS(UK) Executive Committee for organising this and driving it
along in the face of adversity, along with Southwater Events and the Telford
International Centre staff, for making it all possible. Not forgetting all the
Hall Managers and all the other volunteers for playing their part too - a great
joint effort which actually resulted in a really smooth running show, with a
great "feel good factor" !
The display was presented on an area of
approximately 18 feet x 4 feet (5.8m x 1.2m) of table space (thanks again for
the extra space !)
There are a total of 111 models on the whole display - 13
in 1/48th and the rest in 1/72nd scale, built by 10 of our
members.
