The "Flying Display" for our IPMS 60th
Anniversary International Air Tattoo consisted of seven full teams of
internationally famous aerobatic teams, flying above the display with "smoke
on" !
Representing the U.K., France, Italy, the
Netherlands, Japan and two from the USA, the teams are all flying their
"trademark" formations against familiar backdrops that are so relevant to each
of them.
So raise your eyes upwards and enjoy
the show !

Making a welcome return to the Telford
International Centre for our IPMS 60th Anniversary International Air Tattoo at
SMW2023, is our U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds "History Formation".
Originally inspired by a 1985 oil painting
entitled Thunderbird Lead, this "mixed" formation features each of
the significant types of aircraft flown by the Thunderbirds since
1953.
Flying over their home, Nellis Air Force Base in
Nevada, with Sunrise Mountain in the background, the formation comprises :
- F-84G Thunderjet (1953 - 1955)
- F-84F Thunderstreak (1955 - 1956)
- F-100C Super Sabre (1956 - 1963)
- F-105B Thunderchief (1964)
- F-100D Super Sabre (1964 - 1968)

Blue Impulse 1960 - Present
|
 |
|
Although the Japanese Air Self Defence Force
display team Blue Impulse currently fly Kawasaki T-4 aircraft, they were
originally formed in 1960 on the North American F-86F-40 Sabre, which they flew
until 1982. Our IPMS 60th Anniversary International Air Tattoo marks the first
return of this "5-Ship Delta" formation of Sabres to the Telford International
Centre since SMW 2010 !
The team are flying over the Chureito Pagoda, a
five-stories pagoda that is a part of the Arakura Sengen Shrine located in
Fujiyoshida City. It is located on the mountainside, the most popular
sightseeing spot for taking photos of Mount Fuji.

Grasshoppers 1973 - 1995

|
Once a firm favourite on the European air show
circuit, the Royal Netherlands Air Force Helicopter Display Team performed with
a formation of four Alouette III helicopters. Here, we are pleased to welcome
them for their first appearance at the Telford International Centre for our
IPMS 60th Anniversary International Air Tattoo, at Scale ModelWorld
2023.
They are seen here flying over Middelmolen water mill,
Molenaarsgraaf, South Holland.
Yes, these models are
motorised - all of the rotor blades are actually spinning !

Red
Arrows 1965 -
Present
|
 |
|
The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red
Arrows, flying nine BAE Hawk T.1A aircraft in their iconic "Diamond Nine"
formation are no strangers to Scale ModelWorld. So it was inevitable that they
would be back in Telford for our IPMS 60th Anniversary International Air Tattoo
at SMW2023.
This year however, they are overflying the Mall and
Buckingham Palace in London. during celebrations for Her Majesty the
Queens Platinum Jubilee celebrations, in June 2022.

Blue
Angels 1946 -
Present
|
 |
|
The world's oldest display team, the U.S. Navy
Blue Angels, make their first appearance in a flying display at Telford
for our IPMS 60th Anniversary International Air Tattoo at SMW 2023. Although
they actually fly a display with six aircraft (four plus two solos), their
Diamond formation of four F/A-18A aircraft (which they flew from 1986 - 2010)
here demonstrate their famous "Double Farvel" manoeuvre, with numbers 1 and 4
flying inverted in the formation.
The Blue Angels are no strangers to the Golden
Gate Bridge, as the team performs each year in San Fransico Bay for Fleet
Week.

Patrouille de France 1953 - Present
|
 |
|
The French Air & Space Force display team,
La Patrouille de France have actually flown at Scale ModelWorld
previously, back in 2013..... Back then, it was a "History Formation" of the
five different types of aircraft the team has flown since 1953, which of course
included their current mount, the Alpha Jet, which they have used since 1981.
But on the occasion of our IPMS 60th Anniversary International Air Tattoo at
SMW 2023, the Patrouille de France appear for the first time with their
whole team of eight Alpha Jets, in "Diamant" formation. However, each of
the aircraft sported different tailfin markings, illustrating the history of
special markings the team has carried to commemorate notable events and
anniversaries.
The Patrouille de France fly over Paris quite
frequently and here, we can see many of its iconic landmarks, including the
Eiffel Tower, Sainte-Clotilde Basilica, Palais de Chaillot, the River Seine,
Pont des Arts, Pont du Carrousel, Pont Royal, and the Musée d'Orsay.

Frecce Tricolori 1961 - Present
|
 |
|
The Italian Air Force Frecce Tricolori have flown
three different types of aircraft in their history, and they transitioned to
their current mount, the Aermacchi MB-339, in 1982. But this is the first time
that their entire team of ten have appeared at the Telford International
Centre, to celebrate our IPMS 60th Anniversary International Air Tattoo, at
Scale ModelWorld 2023.
Against the iconic backdrop of the Colosseum in Rome,
the team are performing their famous "Il Gran Finale", where the number 10 Solo
aircraft flies up and through the tri-coloured smoke of the main formation.
